Vata diet: Oatmeal with roasted Coconut & Sesame

The flavourful crunch of roasted coconut & sesame adds a nutty aroma to the creaminess of the piping hot oatmeal. This comfort food in the morning can help you stay regular while you are rebuilding your strength after an illness. Oatmeal is easy to digest and contains ample amounts of soluble and insoluble fiber to keep your bowels healthy.

Ingredients (2 portions)

  • 475 ml water
  • ½ - 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • ½ - 1 tsp raw sugar
  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds
  • 2 tbsp coconut flakes
  • 60 grs oatmeal
  • salt to taste

Bring 325 ml of water to a boil and add coconut oil and sugar. Reduce heat and let simmer. Dry roast the sesame seeds and coconut flakes on medium heat until they start to brown (take care not to burn them). Grind the oatmeal in a coffee grinder, mix with 150 ml of cold water and add salt. Then add the oatmeal to the boiling hot water. Return to a boil stirring constantly. Cook until it reaches a soft, even, creamy consistency and has absorbed all of the water. Top with toasted coconut flakes and sesame seeds.

Pitta Diet: Oatmeal with Almonds & Dates

A nourishing creamy oatmeal for breakfast to stay warm in winter. Oats are an ideal breakfast grain because it is easier to digest than wheat or corn and it 'sticks to the ribs.'

Ingredients (2 portions)

  • 475 ml almond milk
  • 2 tsp ghee
  • 60 grs oatmeal
  • 4 tbsp almonds, peeled (soaked in water overnight)
  • 4 dried dates
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom

Place all ingredients in a pot, bring to a boil and keep stirring constantly. Lower heat to a simmer and cook until soft. (Use double or triple the quantity of milk depending upon level of dryness in your body).

Kapha diet: Baked Apple with Rosemary

The nourishing sweetness and warmth of baked apples helps calm the nervous system and lifts your spirits. A warming breakfast that tonifies and builds bodily tissues as the combination of ghee, cooked apples and digestive spices is ideal for our digestive system to process.

Ingredients (2 portions)

  • 3 sweet apples
  • 1½ tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp rosemary
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom

Preheat oven to 190⁰C. Wash apples, remove core and cut in thick slices. Arrange in a baking dish. Melt ghee in a saucepan and drizzle evenly over apples, or brush each one with a light coat. Sprinkle fresh rosemary and cardamom evenly overtop. Place in oven and cook for roughly 30 minutes or until tender. Serve hot.
